Cone Beam Computed Tomography

Truly one of the most important imaging and diagnostic breakthroughs in modern dentistry, cone beam CT provides 3D images of the jaw structures and teeth, with extraordinary accuracy and detail. It has become the gold standard for patient care in implant dentistry.

The 3D images enable us to plan our surgery so we are able to avoid causing damage to nerves and to vital structures, including blood vessels and the sinuses.

Virtual surgery can be performed and evaluated before actually surgery takes place.
And since we have our own I-CAT™ machine, we can, during a delicate surgical procedure, stop to take an additional scan, if warranted. This gives us the ability to maintain the safest possible conditions, even in the most difficult surgical situations.

Specialized Dentistry of New York is one of the few dental practices to provide cone beam CT in our office. Most practices have to send their patients to an outside imaging center.

This equipment defines “state of the art”. Our cone beam CT, operated by our expertly trained staff, offers maximum convenience, safety and precision. These 3D films of the jaws and the surrounding structures may, in some instances, allow us to detect potential problematic lesions of the head and neck.

Laser Cavity Detection

Previously we had to rely on the use of a dental explorer (pick) to detect, small, soft or sensitive spots on the teeth.

Today, our laser cavity detection system enables us to much more accurately detect hard-to-find cavities and decay hidden beneath tooth surfaces in their very early stages, when are they so small that they don’t show up on x-rays. With early detection, we are able to treat them before they become large, painful cavities and cause even more damage to your teeth.

This “early warning” cavity diagnosis and prompt treatment means smaller fillings and, in some cases, may avoid the need for more serious procedures, including root canals.

Electric High-Speed Hand Pieces

The traditional dental handpiece is air driven. The compressed air drives a turbine in the head of the handpiece, producing a high-pitched, often anxiety-provoking noise and vibration. Our electric handpieces are powered by an extremely quiet electric motor, with much greater strength (torque) and precision than air-driven equipment.

This vastly improved handpiece design can reduce the time you spend in the chair and may significantly improve the quality and fit of your final restorations.

Piccolo Cad-Cam System

Our goal in utilizing our ultra-high tech Piccolo computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD-CAM) system is to be able to deliver perfectly-fitted tooth replacements. After we take an impression it’s poured in stone (plaster), creating a model of the tooth, which this equipment digitally scans, making it possible for the lab to create the ultimate in accurate restorations.

Gentle Piezoelectric Surgical Alternative

We use gentle Piezoelectric surgical instrumentation for many oral surgical procedures. It is much kinder to the soft tissues (gums, blood vessels, nerves and the membranes which line delicate areas, such as the sinuses). There is no drill. Instead ultrasonic vibration produced by a special surgical instrument is used to achieve unparalleled precision and patient comfort.

Central Sterilization Area

We maintain a fully equipped central sterilization area, which exceeds industry and government standards, where all dental instruments are first cleaned in ultrasonic baths, then are sterilized under pressure in our autoclave machines, We have staff members dedicated exclusively to maintaining the highest level of instrument and equipment cleanliness.

Invisalign Treatment

If any recent dental technology development deserves to be called revolutionary, it is Invisalign. In many cases, it is the highly desirable alternative to unsightly and uncomfortable metal braces and wires.

Using three dimensional CAD-CAM imaging technology, the Invisalign computer reads the current positions of misaligned teeth from clinical information collected in our office by our Invisalign-certified orthodontist.

Working together using interactive software with Invisalign, our orthodontist will simulate the ideal position your teeth should be in to produce a beautiful smile. The software generated models will then generate a series of precise steps to move your teeth in a safe and effective manner. The Invisalign system will then fabricate a series of clear plastic aligner trays that are so precise and unobtrusive that, when you are wearing them, they are essentially invisible to others.

Each aligner tray is designed to perform a highly controlled, precise movement so that teeth are moved with little or no pain in a gradual and effective manner. All of this is accomplished with the virtually invisible Invisalign trays at regular intervals — until the teeth are in their final position. They are both comfortable (no metal brackets or wires) and removable. And unlike traditional braces there are no restrictions on what you eat during treatment or the inconvenience of wearing noticeable brackets on your teeth. It is truly is the “invisible way” to move your teeth and create the smile you deserve.

Oral Cancer Screening

31,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year and, because it has an exceptionally high mortality rate, more than half of them will die over the next five years.

If detected early, 90 percent of oral cancer cases are curable. Unfortunately, traditional detection processes which rely only on the naked eye, often fail to detect the presence of oral cancer until it is too late for effective treatment.

During every hygiene visit, our dental hygienists conduct screenings for visual signs of oral cancer, as well as for abnormalities that a visual examination cannot detect.

For suspicious lesions or spots that are detected visually, a simple and reliable test can be used. It is non-invasive and painless. Using a small brush, our dentists just wipe off some of the cells from the spot and have them evaluated to determine whether any of them are abnormal and could become cancerous if left alone for several years. But since we cannot rely solely on visual detection, we go much further. We use the world’s leading oral cancer screening equipment, the VELscope. This revolutionary hand-held FDA-approved device helps detect abnormalities even before they become visually apparent. The exam takes only 2-to-3 minutes and there is no discomfort. If the area is sufficiently suspicious, a surgical biopsy is conducted.
